I agree completely – we must look at both. The reason I encourage us to look at the intentions of others is because it gives us freedom to choose a different meaning. We can believe that people are inherently good and we can see their hearts that way. In doing so it can lead to more conversation and deeper connection. If we only see what someone does we might stay stagnant in our incorrect beliefs about them and it won’t get to the heart of the matter. If someone’s actions are consistently unkind it would lead me to believe that their heart isn’t in the right place. Still worth a conversation to clarify and share feelings but maybe not a relationship worth pursuing if actions continue to be unkind.
